Who is behind this site?
You might want to know who is behind these products and the motivation to create them? I, Maiken, am the driving force. I have worked in communication about sustainability for years. These days I mainly coach people and work on plans for socialising sustainability through media and education. There was one concrete and tangible idea that could make the urgency more visible and less easy to ignore. It was ideal for my first step. You see the idea here realized, which I managed to do with Ed Hawkins' stripes; with Uta Negelen for design and credits to Winand Derks van de Ven for the beautiful photography.
I am aware of the urgent need to slow consumption down. Why then offer more products for sale? It's paradoxical. We need to shift from a consume oriented culture to a culture where people are happy without buying more stuff. It is possible. Through my coaching I see how people become happy when they are finding and following their purpose and mission, find people to connect with and find a sense of belonging. It does not mean people will refrain from lifestyles that emit green house gasses. For this awareness is needed.
These products are awareness-creating tools.
Especially in the West we need to become aware of how and to what degree we are responsible for what is happening globally. The end will be dark if we don't act fast enough. Despite the other effective ways to happiness, our system is dependent on consumption. So awareness is extra important.
By wearing the products, we make the topic visible and harder to ignore.
We need to reach groups that are less aware of these things. With Ed Hawkins' warming stripes, illustrating globally collected temperatures from 1850 to 2023, we make the urgency visual. By seeing people wearing one of the products, people get reminded of the climate topic nearby, resulting in that it is harder to ignore the topic; it becomes easier to speak up and make sustainable choices.
